Thank you so much, Svitlana - your geography lesson has helped make so much more sense of this place I thought of as a single entity - even though, as you describe these districts, many large metro areas are put together like this. Reading or hearing about “Kyiv” will now come with a virtual asterisk. I appreciate you sharing your personal experience. Those of us far afield from this war cannot imagine your reality but I can tell you with bone-deep certainty that the good people of the world weep with you and intentions are sent with hope and love - we see you, we hear you, we stand with you. ❤️🇺🇦
I find myself on telegram channels during air alarms, trying hopelessly to track the location of the drones by scrambling onto google maps with each notification. It is one dysfunctional way of getting to know a city. The other week in Kharkiv I heard a drone overhead, then glanced at the telegram: ah yes, this district. Turns out reality did not actually require online verification.
Oh I know, I wish they actually streamed the radar online, but that’s not possible due to security reasons, right? So the best we have is this live-tweeting of sorts of the drone/missile locations from those who do have access to radars. I remember this one time also, a drone flew by above me and I only realized that it was heading into my district post-factum… Reality doesn’t require online verification, yes, unless the online notices are timely..
I did spend a day with an air defence unit last year for an article - so I saw this iPad with all the live information - very impressive system and guys
Kyiv sounds remarkably like New York City. Both in the " i hate it" and " i love it".
I can't name every district or borough in NYC. I know, like Kyiv, they are all different, in very similar fashion as you described.
What is different is how in NYC, diffetent disyricts like Chelsea, Harlem, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, are worlds away from each other. How many would have anybody to call if an attack happened in another district? Kyiv might upstage us in that regard.
I remember the 9/11 attacks. I cannot say how it would have been if several 9/11's were stetched out over srberal years. Or maybe now i can, thank you.

Yes…. The neighborhoods are worlds away from one another yet so similar. You’re right, it’s like 9/11 but many times over.
